eBay Gets Wiki with JotSpot

By jotspot_jim 06/14/2006

Today, eBay introduced a wiki, built and hosted by JotSpot!

www.ebaywiki.com is a wiki where eBay's 183 million registered users can contribute and discuss eBay-related matters like buying and selling tips.

JotSpot CEO Joe Kraus said:

This represents another milestone in the coming of age of wikis. This concept is reaching a much broader audience.

With the launch of www.ebaywiki.com, eBay is making a serious commitment to user generated content. A wiki is pure user generated content. And user generated content leads to other sites pointing to your domain and increase your visibility in search engines. The rules of search enginer marketing show that this drives traffic, ad clicks and revenue.

You can get your own JotSpot wiki here.

Congrats to Adam, Ben, Brian, Graham, Reuben, Rus, Scott J, and the eBay team for making it happen!

JotSpot Spreadsheets in a Wiki

Stop emailing spreadsheets! Simply copy and paste to publish your spreadsheets as an interactive wiki page.

JotSpot Spreadsheets is now in the app gallery and ready for single click installation into your wiki. JotSpot Spreadsheets is the new version of Tracker, JotSpot's collaborative web spreadsheet application.

To install, log into your (2.6 and higher) wiki, click "Install Applications" in the lower left sidebar, and select Spreadsheets. Once installed, you can currently create as many spreadsheets as you want -- each spreadsheet becomes another wiki page. (Please note: Spreadsheets requires a 2.6 wiki. The 2.6 upgrades are "coming soon", I promise!)

The new version has a ton of improvements, including more Excel-like user experience and improved support for formulas. Let us know what you think!

Guy Creese from the Burton Group and Williams College gave the Class Reunion Planner a test drive. He writes:

But, at first glance, all that functionality at only $40 a year doesn't seem too bad. A year ago, if someone had told me such capabilities would be available for such a low price, I would have laughed. It's clear even I can be taken aback at technology's pace.

Developer post: Finding Your Way in JotSpot

Scott McMullan wrote an excellent post on navigating your JotSpot wiki over at the JotSpot Developer Connection.

Navigating and maintaining a sense of place when using a wiki can be difficult. When pages can be created almost anywhere, even the most meticulously gardened wikis can become confusing and hard to navigate, particularly for new users.

There are a number of ways to address this problem, but here are four common approaches:

  1. Displaying recently changed pages
  2. Displaying recently visited pages
  3. Displaying pages that are "under" the current page
  4. Displaying pages that link to the current page

While none of these views are visible by default in Jot, they're all easy to add to your wiki by packaging up a few lines of code as a plugin.

Project Manager version 0.94 is available now in the JotSpot Application Gallery. If you have already installed this app in your account, we recommend you un-install the application and install version 0.94.

Here are Project Manager upgrade instructions (0.8, 0.9, and 0.93 to 0.94):

  1. Login as "admin"
  2. Mouse over the "More Actions" menu and choose "Manage Packages"
  3. Find the "ProjectManagerApp" in the list of packages
  4. Click the "Remove" link next to it. (Note that this will not remove your PM data; your data is safe even if the PM package is removed.)
  5. Choose the "Force Removal" checkbox, and confirm the removal
  6. In the nav bar on the left of the page (which may be hidden), locate the "Installed Applications" area
  7. Click the "Browse Application Gallery" link
  8. In the gallery area, locate the PM app (the top link)
  9. Click "Install Now" and confirm

The newly installed Project Manager app will find your data, and you can resume
your work.

By jotspot_jim 01/25/2006

Because everything is a page in your JotSpot, it is possible to use page permission in order to establish rules about who can edit your ToolBar.

KbArticle124 tells you how.

KbArticle124   WikiHome >> KnowledgeBase >> KbArticle124

Using page permissions, it is possible to limit which users are permitted to edit the ToolBar (sidebar) page.

The ToolBar page is titled "ToolBar" in your account.
1. Navigate to the ToolBar

2. Edit the page permissions:

3. Type "-guest" in the Edit field

4. Save the page.

Users can add navigation links by customizing your ToolBar (sidebar). Add links to WikiHome or other popular pages. ToolBar (sidebar) navigation links help users not get lost as they navigate your JotSpot. feedback.jot.com uses them to link to our Tutorials, Forums and Knowledge Base.

KbArticle119 tells you how.

KbArticle119   WikiHome >> KnowledgeBase >> KbArticle119

It is possible to edit your Toolbar page (the sidebar) to add links to pages you have created:

1. Click the "Edit" link in the Toolbar.

2. You must use Markup edit mode.
3. Type the name of the page (WikiWord page titles) or use double bracket links.
4. Save the page.
