Import Word documents
Topic: transform the complete contents of Microsoft Word-compatible documents into wiki pages.
1. You must first Create and Save a new wiki page (we named ours 'testWordImport' and saved a bit of sample text):
Note: you can import a Word document to an existing page but the document will over-write everything on that page. Since you can always revert to an earlier version, this is not a major problem. It may be what you want to do. Often, however, you will want to import a Word document to a new wiki page.
2. Click Import Word Document from the More Actions menu:
3. Choose a document for import by finding it on your local machine (ours was on the desktop and named 'testWin.doc'). Then, click Import document:
4. Our Word document looked nearly the same in JotSpot as it did in Word. The major difference was that the document is imported using the same default font you have specified for your wiki page (in this case, Verdana):
You can edit this wiki page at any time, using all JotSpot editing features to modify the document.
5. You can make changes to your Word document and import it again. Here, we added some styling and a table in Word, all of it recognized by JotSpot upon import:
Mild Disclaimer: we cannot guarantee that JotSpot will recognize everything in Word. Experiment. You can always edit in JotSpot (shown just below) or revert to an earlier version of the Word document that you imported:
You may use any text processing program which outputs Microsoft Word-readable .doc or .rtf files to create wiki pages.
We recommend this feature for uploading (importing) Word documents you have already created which are needed to support tasks and collaboration on the wiki. Your wiki can archive these documents - while also allowing them to be edited by those with the appropriate page permissions. Each saved edit is preserved as a distinct wiki page version.
JotSpot supports import of Word documents. You cannot currently export the wiki page back from JotSpot to the original Word document. This may be supported in the future. Meanwhile, one-way import supports the wiki philosophy of keeping Jotspot's design, implementation and support requirements as simple for you as possible.
Your mileage (the results of importing Microsoft Word documents) may vary. Conversion (mapping) of a document created in one version of Word (6, 97 or XP 2002) for a specific operating system version (Windows 98, XP or even Mac OS/X) is complex. The results obtained when importing that document to another application (in this case, a wiki) may not always perfectly match the original document.
However, as the examples above show, you should be able to retain a useful level of structure and style between your local document and the same document when imported to JotSpot.
If you experience serious anomalies or cannot import your document, contact JotSpot support. Be ready to share exactly what version of Word you were using as well as details about your machine and operating system. We will also need to know exactly what happened between the document as it was created and as it was imported so we can help you become more productive as quickly as possible.
