Email wiki pages to others

The contents of any wiki page can be sent via email to the recipients you specify.

How To Do It:

1. View the wiki page you want to email.

2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Email this page link in the Tools category.

3. Specify the people to whom you want to send the email. You can enter the user names of other registered wiki users or complete email addresses.

3. Enter a message to send with the page. Any text entered into the "Your message" box is included in the body of the email message.

4. To send a link to the page, select the Include Page as Link checkbox.

5. To include the page as HTML in your email, select the Include Page as HTML checkbox. (If you select both the Link and HTML checkboxes, the email will include both the page contents and a link back to the page in the wiki.)

6. Click the Send Email button to send the page and/or link to the specified recipients.

JotSpot confirms that the message was sent. Like any email message, your recipients will receive them based on the responsiveness of their Internet Service Provider and personal mail application:

Here is how the email is displayed in Google Mail (it may look different in your mail application):

Any text entered into the "Your message" box is included at the top of the email.

Note that the wiki page is sent to your mail program as 'page.html'. Viewing page.html in a browser will display the email. Note that we asked for the email to be sent in HTML format. Your email application may be able to display this format directly (inline to the email application).

Downloading page.html to your desktop will make it available as a viewable file locally. Select your browser's 'Open File' (or equivalent command) from the File menu, navigate to the location on your hard drive where your wiki page email was saved and open it in your browser.

If you select Include Link but not Include HTML in the JotSpot email form, your email will look like this when received:

Tell Me More:

Registering people as named users of a wiki offers many advantages; sending email conveniently is one of them. You may want to open a new browser window that lists named users when sending several emails at the same time. Printing a list of named users and keeping it handy may be even more efficient.

Emailing wiki pages can be useful for a variety of reasons. You can send alerts to yourself, team members or others who may be collaborating on a wiki page - including the annotation you composed in the email form's message field. You might want to send the content of certain pages to peers, customers or friends who would not otherwise have access to the wiki.

You can set page permissions to decide whether all named users or none will be given the right to mail the current page as well as any of its subpages.
