Create a new wiki page using email

Topic: Sending email to a page that does not yet exist in your JotSpot wiki creates a new page. The title of the newly created page is the subject line of your email.

How To Do It:

1. You can create a new page by including its title with your wiki's secret word in the To: field of an email message.

We have swapped in the name of a new page we want to create (NewWikiPage as shown above), attached it to the secret word for the wiki (+docd9102) and mailed (sent) it to the wiki. The email address of the wiki is the same as its URL address (in this example it is docdev.jot.com).

Note:We recommend that you include text for the Subject of the email but you can create a new page for the wiki without it. The name you enter into the To: field becomes the page name of the new wiki page (for instance, NewWikiPage above).

3. You can find your new wiki page by using the Search box or, as we do here, by looking for it on the Recent Changes page:

Note:Your page will be usually be available in the wiki within a minute or two. However, this depends entirely on the behavior of your email program, the speed of your connection and the routing policy of your Internet Service Provider.

1. Your new page will reflect its origin as an email message, including subject and author:

This page can be edited (with the addition of any WYSIWYG styling desired). You can include new attachments, link to other pages, etc. Indeed, you can create additional content for this page, as can others who are given permission to write to this wiki page. In other words, it behaves in every respect 'just like' any other wiki page ... because it is.

Tell Me More:

You will develop reasons to create new pages from email based on your own working style. You may find it convenient to email drafts of ideas or other content, tasks, scheduling items to the wiki while you are already busy in your email application. This saves you having to switch between tools and lose your context.

You can also use your wiki as a way to CC: (copy) yourself and others on important new emails that you are creating on-the-fly.

Keep in mind that the wiki does not check email to make sure the sender is a legitimate user. Of course, emailed pages can be deleted at any time from the wiki. You (or your administrator) can decide which pages of a wiki may receive email, depending on the purpose and audience of those pages.
