Comparing versions of pages
Whenever a page is updated a new version of the page is created, but you can still access all previous versions. JotSpot enables you to examine the differences between any two versions and save a previous version as the current version.
1. Click the Show version history link at the top of the page:
2. To view a particular version, click on its version number in the Revsions list. For example, to look at the fifth version of this page, you could click the Revision 5 link:
Note: If there is a large number of versions, you can select Older or Newer at the bottom of the Versions page to navigate through the revision list.
3. To compare two versions, select the check boxes for the versions you want to compare and click the Compare selected versions button. By default, the two most recent versions are selected.
JotSpot displays parts of each selected page in a Single-page view that looks like this:
In the comparison views:
4. To see both versions of the page side-by-side, click the Side-by-side view tab.
This view displays the latest version with the revisions marked on the left and the older version of the page on the right:
5. To change the versions you are comparing side-by-side, select a different version from one of the Other revision menus at the top of the Compare page:
6. To display one of the revisions in view mode, click the Revision link for that version:
7. To return to the Versions page, click the Back to Revision History link in the upper right corner:
You can easily revert to a earlier version of a page if you make a mistake or save changes that do not produce the results you wanted.
To revert to a previous page revision:
1. View the revision that you want to revert to. You can click the link for a particular revision on the Revisions or Compare page, or specify the revision you want to view by appending ?revision=nn to the URL for the page.
2. Click the edit button to edit the page.
3. Make any desired changes to the page and click the save button to save the page.
Version control and the ability to recover earlier revisions is a staple of database management and an especially important feature for collaborative environments. Since JotSpot community members have the ability to modify eachothers' pages, they also need to be able to roll back changes in case things go wrong.
JotSpot offers administrators fine-grained controls to support security and (when advisable for project tasks) privacy. However, versioning remains the default case for wiki collaborations. Even when a JotSpot author works alone, the ability to compare and/or recover earlier versions offers powerful support for brainstorming, creativity, and productivity.
