Backup your wiki

Topic: make a backup to your local machine of all content, forms, styles and data in your wiki for which you have page permissions.

How To Do It:

1. Select the More actions pull-down menu from the top of your JotSpot work area. Then, click on Backup this wiki from the JotSpot Actions submenu.

2. JotSpot will automatically create a (compressed) zip file of the wiki's contents (see below for links if you need to learn more). This file will be placed on your local machine at a location that was set by your browser. For instance, Mozilla Firefox offers this screen with Downloads options under File-Preferences (the example below sets the download folder to the Desktop):

Note: you will need an 'unzip' utility application to open the compressed file and inspect or use its contents. Your computer's operating system or your company's system administrator may already have installed an unzip application on your local machine. Please consult them or your documentation for more help.

3. Your zipped file will be unzipped to a location on your local machine the was defined by the unzip utility application. After you browse to its location, you may see a folder with a title similar to this:

In this case, the folder's title is a combination of the wiki's name and the current date in year, month, day format. This is very convenient for making daily or near-daily backups.

4. When you open the folder, you will see a network of other subfolders and files (a partial example is shown below):

Tell Me More:

Most likely, you will not need to use this feature unless you are an administrator or a developer of JotSpot applications. Keep in mind also that JotSpot stores all versions of your content online as part of our hosting service on your behalf. In other words, we backup your data you don't have to.

Specifically, the backup feature offloads your own JotSpot account - that is, the pages you are permitted to see. This is a simple, vital security requirement. Therefore, your backup may not necessarily contain all pages in the wiki. Content pages are formatted as standard XML. You might want to use backups to:

  • Write a parser to read the XML and convert the content to another wiki format.
  • Add (merge) files to your folder for re-importation into JotSpot.
  • Inspect specific pages while disconnected from the JotSpot service.
  • Retain a snapshot of your information archive as saved at a moment in time.

Note that back-ups are currently one-way. However, please contact JotSpot support if you desire assistance in re-importing your data back to your wiki.
